2001 BAOC ADVANCED RANKINGS Brown Green Red Blue (rev. 5/18/02)
While the BROWN list contains many who stepped down during the year, the class of the field was 13 year old Heini Ilmarinen. Heini improved steadily to finish the year with a fine first place at Morgan Territory. On GREEN it was Gary Carpenter vs. Haanu Haarma. Last year Gary decided to concentrate on the Green course and wound up on top, 10 points ahead of Haanu, M57. This year Hannu, overcoming his Achilles problems, did not have the opportunity to meet Gary until Joe Grant, the last event of the year for both. Gary, also undefeated at that point, finished third for the day and narrowly lost the top spot of the rankings in the process. Debbie Wojtowicz replaces Annaliese Steuben as top ranked woman on Green while on RED it was Angelica Riley replacing Penny DeMoss as the top ranked female on Red. This big news on the Red list, however, is that Bruce Wolfe, M47, actually got in six runs and handily nudged the traditional leader, Kent Ohlund down to second. Bruce failed to win three of his six races but scored very high in all of them. His loses came to three different runners, none of them Kent. Bruce's biggest win came with a 10 minute margin over Kent at Annadel. Steve Gregg, M44, finished ahead of both at Morgan Territory, Day1 and averaged 101.8 points for the meet but those were his only two ranking runs on Red. Perttu Illmarinen, M18, who split his 5 runs between Green, Red and Blue with mixed results, mostly excellent, left the impression that he could have challenged the leaders on any of those three courses.
On BLUE, James Scarborough increased his 2000 margin over his pursuers with wins in five of his seven runs, four of them 100+ points. His biggest win came on Day 1 of Burton Creek scoring 115.8 points in a 17+ minute victory. As in 2000, the tough battle is for second place but instead of Dan Stoll-Hadayia, it is Wyatt Riley challenging and narrowly passing Syd Reader. The margin of .3 points is the equivalent of only 15 seconds in a typical 80 minute race. In the more significant head-to-head analysis, Wyatt came out on top in 6 of their 10 meetings but total point difference for those encounters was only 890 to 882.1. Replacing Wyatt in fourth place is Vladimir Gusiatnikov, a familiar face to most of us as an OCIN member and the US Team Administrator. In fifth is Martin Fairenfield, another of a quartet of top level newcomers to the club. Tore Myhrvold of Norway had only four runs including a DQ at Joe Grant. Without that one low score he would have had an 87.9 average. 2001 was about the fifth year that Doug Stein, Thorsten Graeve and Steve Gregg have jostled among themselves somewhere near their current places on the list. It's the third year in a row to see Doug end up on top. They are followed by Dan Stoll-Hadayia, having an off year, then Penny DeMoss. She felt the impact of the newcomers in dropping three places though upping her score from 2000. Penny's best run came at Tamarancho with a score of 77.8 points. Narrowly missing the top 10 is another newcomer, Craig Murray. Craig joined the club late in the year and did not get in his minimum four runs. Old timers may remember Craig of NEOC as James' nemesis during their junior years.

RANKING METHODOLOGY
See the 2000 rankings http://orienteer.com/technical/baocrankings/2000.htm for information on ranking methodology. This year's scores are based on results from 14 days of standard orienteering which offer the best competitive conditions: Briones I and II, Sunol, Annadel, Indian Valley, Burton Creek (2,) Big Basin, Tamarancho, Morgan Territory (2,) China Camp, Joe Grant and Calero. Indian Valley had an insufficient number of ranked Blue course runners. China Camp did not have a Blue course but all runners on the Red course were awarded Blue ranking scores. There were not enough ranked Brown runners competing at Tamarancho and China Camp to allow rankings for those events.
Please contact me with corrections or questions regarding the rankings. joe@orienteer.com
