BLUE- The main changes from the final '96 list are due to the departures
of Per Magnussen and Jorg Hofer. Per left the second spot to Lans who
maintained his point level while Thorsten moves up to third. Not making
the list was Mikko Laavainen who returned to Finland after only three
scores averaging 76.8. Neeme Loorits also had three runs on Blue for 71.1
so should appear on the next list.
RED- Kent Ohlund has added ten points to his '96 total, and well he should
as Thorsten added 16 to pull within a point. Kent's 104.9 at the
excellent Calero event is the highest score so far this year. Tapio
dropped to third while Werner Haag makes a surprise jump from 16th to
fourth, mainly off his 103.8 points at China Camp. With three scores and
poised to join the next list are Mark Petersen and Josh Frederichs. Josh
has shown steady improvement this year on an average of 65.0 points.
Apologies to Evan Custer who was omitted from the initial publication of
this list.
GREEN- Steve Smith, the top Green runner last year has been running on
Blue this year leaving yours truly in first despite dropping a few points.
George Minarik and Dennis Wildfogel continue their dual, this time with
George ahead. Kathleen Lennon moved up to 5th due to the elimination of
some low scores from early 96 in the calculations and Steve Jankowski
rocketted from 23rd last year to 6th. He has shown the most consistent
improvement among the Green runners this year starting with a 68.6 at
Calero and ending with 96.8 at Joe Grant. It is interesting to note that
the top five on the list are legitimate A category Green orienteers. In
fact, the leaders on all courses except Brown are from the USOF age group
for that course.
BROWN- Aileen Abernathy has shown an even more remarkable progression than
either Josh or Steve in that she improved through all four races this
year from 57.6 to 74.4. to move her just ahead of Marsha Jacobs. Michael
Poulsen, last year's Brown titlist, has moved up to Green. Speaking of
moving up, Gary Kragt has averaged 100.5 points for his three Brown
runs in 96 proving he is ready to get back on Green..., at least. Also
missing from the list is Sarah Minarik, one of the few A category Brown
competitors in the club, with only two Brown runs averaging 77.4 points. A
couple of more average runs for her would give her an easy first place on
the list.
This second quarter ranking period incorporates the 10 "B" meets held over
the last 12 months. Four scores are needed to appear on the list, which
may include credit days and scores on more than one course for the Joe
Grant sprint. The ranking events so far this year are Calero, Indian
Valley, China Camp and Joe Grant. Please send any corrections or
suggestions.
