THE FINAL 1996 BAOC RANKINGS
James Scarborough again topped the club's ranking list, going undefeated
in seven races in 1996 and extending his streak to 12 straight ranking
events. He scored over 100 points in his five of seven counting runs, the
highest being 106.9 at Calero. Per Magnussen, whose last appearance was
for a win at Joe Grant in June, had plenty of points to hold second. Lans
Taylor edged Jorg Hofer for third place after trailing on the second and
third quarter lists. Lans' high score of 100.1 came at Montebello where
he was less than two minutes behind James. Jorg, who was second at the
Sprint Champs, lost his chance for third place on the ranking list having
trouble the final day at Big Basin. In sixth is Thorsten Graeve, moving
up to the Blue list this year after a fine showing on Red last year.
Penny DeMoss, ranked 9th on both Blue and Red is again the top woman in
the club. Her best Blue run came at Las Trampas where she scored 76.3
points.
The Red list is led by Kent Ohlund, the club's top M35. He won two of his
six races over the year. The most decisive for the rankings was his
resounding 101.5 points on Day 1 at Big Basin where he handled the map and
the short course ten minutes faster than Tapio Karras. For his part,
Tapio showed textbook perfection in his progression over the year. He
took in 11 of the 12 ranking events beginning with only 48.4 points at Las
Trampas in February then improved in almost each succeeding event with
hardly a hitch. In the season finale, Day 2 at Big Basin, he had his best
run (90.4 points) and the best of any BAOCer on the course. Also doing
well at Big Basin, at least well enough to move up in the standings, were
Derek MacLean, Syd Reader and Mark Petersen. Gary Carpenter was first in
the second and third quarterly rankings but but did not attend Big Basin
and found himself passed by three who did.
This year Steve Smith concentrated on the Green course after a high finish
in the Red rankings in 1995. He did not appear in the quarterly rankings
because he had only three runs prior to Big Basin. There, after the first
day, it seemed like I might have a chance to hold the lead (I was was in
first on third quarter list) because Steve had a shakey Day 1 run. But he
came back, zipping around the Day 2 Green for 100.0 points and top spot on
the '96 list. Steve's best run, pointwise, came at Briones, 107.2, the
highest score of the year on any course. My best was 103.2 at Sunol.
Dennis Wildfogel and George Minarik, who were not on the course at Big
Basin, retained the next two spots. Both had their high scores at Calero
in January, Dennis with 100.0 points. Evan Custer had his highest score
of the year (94.9) on Day 2 of Big Basin to pass Manfred Kopish and take
the number five place. Manfred, new to the club this year, had his high
point with a win and 101.6 points at Annadel. Among the women, Janet
Petersen maintained her lead over Stapnanie Maclean. But both better
watch out for the fast improving Kathleen Lennon who beat them both over
the two days at Big Basin. Kathleen had 98.9 points on Day 1, the highest
women's score on an advanced course that I can remember.
On the Brown course, Michael Poulsen had three meets this spring where he
was the top scoring Brown runner, a large part the reason he finished in
first place for the year. Neither Harold Demoss nor Sarah Minarik had
enough Brown runs to make the list. They opted for other courses at Big
Basin leaving it open to Michael and Marsha Jacobs. Marsha, whose high
point was 71 points at Sunol, finished only three points behind Michael.
