Early BAOC rankings, a work in progress….

1979 BAOC RANKINGS

From The Course-Setter No. 9, BAOC newsletter of Jan-Feb., 1980. Note some of the key people in getting BAOC off to a strong start through their mapping efforts. Bruce Wolfe: Chabot, Larry Shattuck and Ralph Hall: China Camp, Len Holmes: Briones, Carlo Alesandrinin: Tilden, Frank Pabian: Sunol, Joe Scarborough: Joaquin Miller and Redwood, Rich Cunningham: Mitchell Canyon, Jim Weil: Bon Tempe, Frank Stryker: Las Trampas. -js

After leading the rankings all year, Bruce Wolfe wound up with 595 of a possible 600 points to handily win the title for the Blue runners. Bruce may have been aided somewhat by Mats Broberg's DQs in his last two meets which dropped him to third. Thor Palmgren and Roy Parker had good success late in the year but did not have enough runs to challenge.

In this second year of rankings, Larry Shattuck held on nicely to fend off late surges by several other Orange runners led by Len Holmes. New Members Carlo Alesandrini and Frank Pabian had excellent results in their first few meets and we will be looking for them on the Blue Course next year.

The ranking system uses the USOF formula Points= 100 x (2 - your time/winners time) for the best six events.

1978 WEST COAST RANKINGS

The following is from issue 3 of The BAOC Course-Setter, January 1979. 1978 saw the first three "A" meets on the West Coast, its first ranking list and that of BAOC. -js

The three Class A meets this year did provide a beginning for region-wide competition and a basis for some comparison among orienteers on the West Coast. The table ranks all who ran at least three of the six days on the Red and Blue courses. The scoring system is essentially that of the USOF. The rule eliminating the performance of foreigners has particular significance since the top orienteer was clearly Borre Fosse, visiting from Norway. Borre, studying at UNR, won at Eugene and Palomar and helped organize the Mt. Rose meet. There were problems with all of the meets but only day 2 of the Mt. Rose meet was thrown out.

The six meets were Joaquin Miller Park Class B (Feb. 26,) JMP Orange Course (Mar. 12,) Briones Class B (June 25,) JMP Score (July 16,) Peninsula (July 30,) and Bon Tempe class B (Sept10.)
