The class normally spans 3-4 hours beginning with a discussion of the rules,
procedures and techniques of orienteering. Stress will be placed on the
importance of mastering the basics on which to build solid performance. Field
instruction will be through hands-on instruction and practice under orienteering
conditions. The class will close with a critique of the course and analysis of
the results and suggestions for a plan for individual improvement.
Subjects covered will be according to the needs and interests of the participants. Likely topics include history of orienteering, philosophy of orienteering, the organization of the sport, what local events are like, the recreational scene, the competitive scene, goal-setting, beginning and intermediate strategy and map and compass techniques.
The purpose of the course is to provide the participant with a good foundation in orienteering needed to best enjoy the sport for its recreational and/or to advance successfully as a competitor. Small class size will facilitate personalized attention.
Prerequisites: Orienteering I or an understanding of basic map and compass techniques. The curriculum can be modified to take into account the skill levels and objectives of the participants.
What to bring: Base plate (orienteering) compass w/scale, orienteering, studded or hiking shoes as appropriate, lunch, water, wet weather gear, if needed. A wide selection of compasses will be available for purchase or rent at minimal cost.
How to Get There: Take highway 13, the Warren Freeway, in Oakland to the Joaquin Miller Road exit. Take JM Road east, uphill, to Skyline Drive. Turn left on Skyline Drive and continue uphill for about a mile. The exact meeting location to be determined.
Date/Payment: Dates can be arranged to meet your schedule. The cost is $45 per person with a minimum of four or $180. Once a date has been set, please send your registration with check. Classes are normally limited to 12 students. This class is appropriate for groups or ad hoc classes based on current demand.
