Deploying SO Stands
This is where the lightweight S/P/M system really shines.

  1.  Insert stands with bloused flags and control stations in holders in a two-foot length of three-inch or so diameter cardboard or light plastic tube for carrying.  The tubes used in golf club bags are ideal.
  2.
    1. Insert in reverse order of deployment (if codes and/or EP units are on stands.) Stand units can be "stacked" so that the next flag needed will be on top.  Blousing is especially useful here.
    2. If codes and units are separate, they can be added at the site making sorting of stands  unnecessary.

  3. A carrying vest is available from Scarborough Orienteering for carrying the control units separately. This is suggested for the Velcro version of the SO stand.  Or secure with heavy-duty rubber bands or Velcro straps.  The Velcro stake/unit bond is not sufficient during rough handling.  For normal use, the Velcro is more than adequate if the Velcro surfaces are matched up and firmly pressed together.

  4. Carry one or two tubes with up to ten or more stand assemblies each, like bouquets or over the shoulder or with shoulder straps.

  5. Insert in the ground.
    1. A two-hand thrust with one hand near the tip is usually sufficient in normal soil.
    2. A spike or section of rod and hammer (3/4 - 1 pound) should be carried to poke pilot holes in hard or rocky soils. Light tapping on the Velcro stand is usually OK. Protect the stand and spread the impact with a block of wood on top
    3. The needle-only SPM has a new hammering cap option which allows heavy pounding in hard soils.  (EP version on the drawing boards.)
Tip: Tether spike to hammer with a cord. Attach bright surveyors tape.

  6. Marker pickup could not be simpler. It is often not necessary to even stop. Pull stand unit while walking by, blouse and insert the stand into the tube as sheathing a sword.
Tip: A second tube can be slung or attached to backpack to keep one hand free.
