2000 BAOC ADVANCED RANKINGS

Annual rankings summarize the year's competition. Every club member with at least four runs on their advanced color course at a club ranking event during the year should appear on a ranking list. Scores of runners with only three runs or who stepped down are listed below the official list. Brown is an exception in that it is not restricted to age groups. The methodology, which has been in use for several years, is summarized below the ranking lists. The significance and some of the shortcomings of the rankings was discussed in the Bulletin with the1999 list, as were criteria for ranking events. 1999 and prior lists can be found at http://orienteer.com/technical/.

While no system can be perfect, the results can be fairly reliable by using the best data and reasonable subjective judgment. I hope you find them interesting and accurate and perhaps a basis for evaluating your own 2000 performance and goal setting for 2001. Hopefully, these lists will give a good sense of how competitors would stack up at a fair competition where everyone ran their typical 2000 race. I would be very interested to have any, comments, questions or suggestions. Please send them to joe@orienteer.com.

BROWN
The Brown course is essentially an all-comers course in that very few of the participants are in the corresponding USOF age groups. It is not unusual for the leaders to be well-qualified Green runners recovering from injury or otherwise finding reason to get in a minimum number of runs on the course during the year. 1998 and 1999 saw Dennis Wildfogal finish on top. This year it is George Minarik, who incidentally, came back at the end of the year with a good showing on Green. He won two of his five Brown races to finish over 20 points ahead of second place Scott Aster. Harold DeMoss, the lone "legitimate" Brown runner (M65) repeats his fourth rank of last year.

GREEN
The Green rankings have been missing something the last four years or so: the name of Gary Carpenter who, but for devoting his attention to Red and Blue courses, would most likely have been the man to beat on Green. This summer he put together a string of high scoring runs on Green leaving him 5 points clear of Hannu Haarma, not an easy job with Hannu winning six of his ten races. But Gary won three of his five and was second in his other two. Significantly, Gary topped Hannu in two of their three head-to-head meetings at Tahoe. Anneliese Steuben moved up from her second place Brown ranking last year to fifth on Green with 93.4 points. That makes her the top Green woman, 10 points ahead of Sarah Minarik.

RED
The continuing battle for first between Kent Ohlund and Tapio Karras was well into its fifth year when Neal Barlow decided to jump into the action. At the end of the year it was Kent Ohlund on top again, the fourth time in the last five years and Neal in second off four solid runs at Burton Creek, China Camp and Montebello. Tapio had his usual prolific season with 13 runs at ranking events and six wins and again was only a couple of points out of first. His most notable victory was day two at Burton Creek when he came in three minutes ahead of Neal. But the head-to-head record repeated the story: Kent in first, 2-0 against Neal and 3-2 against Tapio. Neal beat Tapio 2-1. Honorable mention mu Penny DeMoss after leading last year's Green list takes 10th on Red to replace Angelica Riley as the top BAOC woman.

BLUE
The top seven on this year's Blue list are in pretty much the same order as last year. James Scarborough repeats as BAOC's top male with wins in seven of his nine ranking runs. James' best runs, most likely were as the top BAOC runner over the two days at Burton Creek finishing 10 minutes clear each day against all of the club's best. Dan Stoll-Hadayia handed James one of his rare club losses, nipping him by eight seconds at Sunol. Dan moves from third to second as Panu Haaramo's DQ's caught up with him. Panu dropped from second last year down to ninth as three of his six runs were scored as DQ. The man to watch on Blue is fast improving Syd Reader. He moved ahead of Wyatt Riley by nearly four points into third place and within only a half point of Dan. Dan and Syd traded victories in their head-to-head races during the first half of the year but Syd's impovement was evident finishing ahead of Dan the last four of the year.
